Sometimes we feel down or just like blah. Sometimes we've even had a bad day and just want to chill or relax afterward to unwind. Most of the time we find ourselves doing things that feed our flesh.
When feeling down or sad or overwhelmed or defeated we need to feed our spirit instead of turning to things that feed our flesh.
Some of the things I like to do is play my Nintendo Switch or watch a movie/ TV show. Although initially there seems to be nothing wrong with this because I've told myself it's fine and that it's okay for me to just relax, it is in those moments where I truly need to be feeding my spirit.
Watching the TV show or movie or playing a game is only a temporary distraction to the true hunger we're facing. When we're feeling low, we don't need distractions or temporary solutions. Have you ever noticed that after that initial feeling of being overwhelmed, or down, or borderline depressed, those emotions start to snowball and by the end of the week you're feeling worse? Or you've spent less and less time with God? Sometimes we think we're just taking a break and relaxing but it can be the enemy's way of attacking us when we are vulnerable, hence, the distraction.
The real solution? Our spirit needs to be refueled. Once refueled we'll feel much better and more focused. How do we refuel our spirit? Spending time with God via prayer, worship or praise, and reading our Word. Scripture reminds us of Jesus' words that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeded out of the mouth of God. We need God's Word.
"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
Matthew 4:4 KJV
"And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live."
Deuteronomy 8:3 KJV
It is food to our spirit. This is how we stay sharp and ready to go. Just like having breakfast in the morning fuels our flesh and gives us the energy we need to start the day, the Word is our fuel.
Furthermore, we have to put on the whole armor of God. Part of this armor is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. The more that we read the Word, the more we can be aware of the enemy's tricks and will be prepared.
"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:"
Ephesians 6:17 KJV
Again we need God's Word. The Word is our weapon and we can't show up to a fight without a weapon. If we do then that means we're unprepared and likely to lose that battle.
Hebrews 4:12 says that the word of God is quick, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. This is the kind of weapon I want to have during a fight, a triple threat! Quick! Powerful! Sharper than any two-edged sword!
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
Hebrews 4:12 KJV
Let me be clear: There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking time to relax and do the things you enjoy. I just want to encourage you to be mindful of when your spirit needs to be fed and hope that when needed you'll choose to fuel your spirit rather than feed into the desires of the flesh.
God Bless You and I hope this has been an inspirational seed for your soul 🌼
